Artists born in R.I. who's work has gone far beyond

Born in Providence - William Grosvenor Congdon, (1912-1998) was, as his name may suggest, from a wealthy East Side family, but left Providence in the 50's to make his way in New York City. Despite successfully exhibiting with the era's action painters, he expatriated to Italy, far from the influence of the New York City art scene, to spend the rest of his life painting in Italy. The RISD museum mounted a powerful exhibition of his work in 2002 and, although his work needs to be seen in person for the full impact, projo.com put together this slideshow about Congdon and his work.

Born in Saunderstown - The exhibit of R.I. artist Gilbert Stuart at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City closed on Jan. 16 but the museum's website has put together an online gallery tour featuring more than thirty images from the exhibit. A cool feature is the ability to zoom in on the work to see sharp and clear detail at close to life size. There is even a Gilbert Stuart gift shop!
For the kids, there are activities like a interactive crossword puzzle and an animated story which teaches children about Gilbert Stuart and his famous subjects, such as George Washington. Gilbert Stuart online exhibit
