Projo.com is establishing this tribute page for Army National Guard Sgt. Christopher Potts, from Tiverton, R.I., who was killed in a gun battle in Iraq on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004.

From Roger Bosse, Warren, RI
Thank you Sgt. Christopher Potts for your service to our country. Thank you for going there and fighting so that my family and I can be safe here. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

From Christian Neary, APO, AE
As I write I am burdened with a very heavy heart over the loss of fellow Rhode Islander Sergeant Christopher Potts and our attached medic from the Arkansas National Guard, Sergeant Russell Collier during combat operations on October 3, 2004. At approximately 430pm (local time) SGT Potts, another section from the battery and two squads of the Iraqi National Guard were detaining insurgents suspected of building improvised rocket launchers for use against American forces. As they traveled south along “Route Cobras”, the patrol came under small arms fire and they observed a potential shooter fleeing into a nearby housing area. SGT Potts and his patrol pursued the shooter, and dismounted from their armored HMMWVs and continued the pursuit on foot. SGT Potts and three other Alpha Battery soldiers along with four Iraqi National Guard troops conducted fire and maneuver across a field in an attempt to locate the insurgent. They took cover behind a berm and SGT Potts’ instructed they would tactically move around the berm in 2-man buddy teams while the others covered their movement. As SGT Potts committed himself to making the turn around the berm he was engaged by automatic weapons fire. He yelled for his soldiers to “stay back” and he ran around the berm while engaging the enemy with his M4 carbine. SGT Christopher Potts made the ultimate sacrifice during this maneuver. His actions saved his soldiers from certain injury or death. SGT Collier, our battery medic, was the second person in SGT Potts’ two man buddy team and immediately upon seeing his friend down, he gave his weapon to another soldier asked them to get his medic bag from the HMMWV and ran to SGT Potts to render first aid. SGT Russell Collier was killed doing what he was trained to do, save lives.
Yesterday, Alpha Battery, 1ST Battalion, 103RD Field Artillery was driven by justice, loyalty ad love for one another by leading a cordon, search, and raid mission focused on the village where our brothers-in-arms lost their lives. Alpha Battery had 70 soldiers, Bravo Battery and Charlie Battery 1-206TH had 20 soldiers each, a Coalition Special Forces Platoon sent 32 soldiers, Bravo Company 2-162 Infantry sent approximately 40 soldiers, the Iraqi National Guard sent 87 soldiers and 1-25TH Attack aviation flew over watch with two Kiowa Warrior Helicopter Gunships and Task Force “Rhody” seized objective “Providence” in an attempt to capture those responsible for taking two fathers, two husbands and two of our brothers-in-arms. During the raid, we detained 52 local nationals and uncovered hundreds of illegal mortars, rockets, rocket propelled grenades, land mines, improvised explosive devices, Kalishnikov rifles, crew served machine guns, electronic timer devices for roadside bombs and various other materials used by the insurgents. At this time, we are reasonably sure we have one of the shooters responsible for killing our brothers and the evidence to process him into the Iraqi penal system for many years to come. This combat force went to the mission and will be driven for the remainder of our time here with the battle cry of “we are doing this for ‘Pottsy’ and ‘Doc’”.
Alpha battery and the entire 1-206TH Field artillery Regiment are moving forward and continuing the mission because we know that is what SGT Potts and SGT Collier would want us to do. Even today, we were patrolling outside the wire, ensuring safety and stability for the Iraqi people because as Benjamin Franklin said “It is a common observation here that our cause is the cause of all mankind, and that we are fighting for their liberty in defending our own."
Today, I signed the recommendation for one of our nation’s highest awards for valor for these two patriots; the Bronze Star medal for both SGT Christopher Potts and SGT Russell Collier. It is my understanding that the Commanding General of the 1ST Cavalry Division, Major General Peter Chirelli will approve these awards and further investigation is underway for additional accolades for their demonstrated valor. Their actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the American Fighting Soldier and truly personify the warrior ethos needed in today’s combat fight soldier. They have reflected tremendous credit on themselves, the 103RD Field Artillery Brigade, the 1-206TH Field Artillery Regiment, the 39TH Brigade Combat Team, the 1ST Cavalry Division, the Rhode Island Army National Guard and the United States Army.
Sergeant Christopher Potts and Sergeant Russell Collier made the ultimate sacrifice for God, Family, and Country and it is with profound humility I pray, “Eternal rest grant unto them oh Lord and may the perpetual light shine upon them [and their families]. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace, Amen.” “REDLEGS FIRST – MISSION ALWAYS” CHRISTIAN M. NEARY Major, Field Artillery Commanding

My heartfelt sympathies are with you at this time.. and I'd like to share a poem with you that has brought me great comfort during a time of loss in my life:
Do not stand by my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow I am a diamond glint on snow I am the sunlight on ripened grain I am the gentle Autumn rain. When you awake in the morning hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight I am the soft starshine at night Do not stand by my grave and cry I am not there . . . I did not die.

From richard august, n. kingstown, ri
As fellow Rhode Islanders who lost a son in Iraq, we want Terri and sons Christopher and Jackson, SGT Potts' parents and extended family to know our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. As James Bradley wrote in his book "Flyboys", " The tragedy of war is what might have been." Although we have lost nearly 1,000 more men and women in Iraq during the "post combat" phase and have had thousands more wounded than in the so-called Thunder Run to Baghdad, this nation's armed forces -reserve and active component- are helping the majority of Iraqis overcome the effects of 30 years under a brutal dictator, his sons and their kin. In so doing, they are making the Mid East and therefore this nation safer for all of us. God bless those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and give strength to those who bear the scars of war. May we never forget them! Richard and Donna August, North Kingstown, RI

From Patricia Miner, Vernon, CT
I had the priviledge to know Chris from the moment he was born. I'm his aunt. I was 9 years old when he was born and from the time Chris could walk and talk there was no doubt that he was special. Everyone that ever camn in contact with him knew it. I spent a lot of time with him, especially in the summer in New Port, when I was in my teens and early twenties. As Chris grew up he never changed. He always had a twinkle in his eye and was quick to laugh. He was simply the best. I can't begin to imagine a world without him because he gave so much to everyone he knew, especially his son Christopher and I'm sure to Jackson too. When Chris died somewhere on this earth a light went out but I KNOW that a star was lit at the same time. His passing had to be marked by something. I can't begin to tell anyone how much I loved my nephew. I'm just sorry I didn't have more time on earth with him but I know I will see him again in heaven. That won't be a moment too soon for me. To Terri, Christopher and Jackson, Chris will always be with you. He isn't someone that would let a thing as trivial as a body keep him away. I encourage you to just sit and listen to your heart because you'll find him and his words to you there. When Chris loved he loved with every part of his being and that bond can't be severed. God bless Chris and God Bless the rest of his family. I couldn't be more proud to call anyone my nephew. I love you Chris. Aunt Patty

to the family of chris potts ,it was an honor to have chris in my squad ,chris was always quiet but boy could i count on him to get the job done ,i knew chris when he first joined the unit we would often play softball together in tournaments around the state....boy did he love to play we often talked about it while on guard duty late at nite on the front gate sipping coffee and watching the occasional rocket go by,i was disappointed that we grew apart in the last few months due to our diffrent job assignments but i would always bum a cup of coffee off him every once in a while.and everytime i entered his room there was a new picture of jackson or others of the family and he would always be writing !!!he was very devoted to his family .i often dream of chris arriving in heaven ,shaking hands with long dead soldiers from wars gone by each saluting him as he marches proudly by with words like "well done". "welcome home son "or "mission accomplished"i hope you have had a chance to meet my dad up there chris and say hi i know the both of you will be looking out for the rest of the boys in taji, dont worry for your family chris ,because your family is now our family now ,im a better man to have known you chris!god bless you

Once approved by site administrators, tribute pages are live on the World Wide Web and available for public viewing.
