To the family and friends of Captain August, may you know he was a fine may he served with the best to protect our country and save us from another devastating disaster like 9/11. He is a rolemodel for all those around not only children but for adults also he showed us honor and coureage. I do believe this country has to remember this war is NOT over that it is far from over. We sometimes think because the president declared the war over there is still a harmful enviorment over in Iraq that we cannot forget. May god be with you and help you with the grief and sorrow and to also celebrate Matthews life as he is a hero to all. To the Family and Friends of Capt. Matthew August:
I write this message with a heavy heart. I learned of Matt's death yesterday in an email from fellow classmates. It was the first time I had heard his name in over 10 years and I was stunned by the news. I knew Matt from our four years together at Hendricken and I was in many of his classes.
He was an extraordinary individual – a scholar student, hardworking athlete, and from what I have read in the papers an honorable officer willing to risk it all for our benefit. He was someone very special. I feel fortunate to have known him.
My most heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, parents, and siblings. All of us are poorer for Matt's death and his family will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

All I can say, on behalf of my family in RI, my 'family' at West Point, and my fellow officers who knew Matt - "And when our work is done, Our course on earth is run, May it be said "Well done, Be thou at peace, ..Live, Serve, and Die we pray, West Point for thee" Blessing to you all as you journey back to West Point for his ceremony. To the August Family,
My deepest condolences go to the entire August family for the loss of Matthew. I heard of the terrible news yesterday in an email from another friend in the 1BCT. Matt and I became good friends during a short TDY in Korea and continued our friendship upon our return to Ft. Riley. I never had the opportunity to meet Maureen, but Matt spoke of her often and he always got a big smile when he talked about hunting with his dad. Although Matt and I haven't spoken since my PCS, I have thought of him often. He was a fine officer, a superb soldier and a remarkable person. I consider it an honor to have been associated with him both professionally and personally. He will be missed by all.

As Matthew's sister, I would like to personally thank all of those who have offered their sympathy in this time of sadness. Matthew truly was a hero and to see this website dedicated to him is a wonderful tribute. All his life, he wanted to be a soldier and to lead soldiers. Right down to his last moments as a leader, Matthew was seen as a hero by his own troops. This is seen in the way 3 of his soldiers also died trying to save their leader, Matthew. I ask that you truly appreciate the sacrifice that my brother has made for all of us- for our freedom- something we don't think of often enough. Matthew and I also have another brother, Major Mark August. He still serves proudly as a pilot in the US Air Force. So please remember, there are still troops everywhere that need our love and support. Thank you again for your support and live your lives being proud to be an American- my brother died for it. ---Melanie August Cargilo

I met Matt in college. We spent a lot of time talking and getting to know one another from afar. Matt spoke of his love for his family, his feeling of being a protector to his sister, his time at West Point and his hopes and dreams for the future. The last time I really spoke with Matt was sometime during my second year at the University of Delaware. Just two nights ago I got into a conversation with my boyfriend about people from our college days. He so happened to be a high school friend of Maureen. What are the odds of both of us knowing one of this couple before we even knew each other? He told me the horrible news which was echoed by a long period of silence. Although Matt has not been in my life for a long long time, this was a great loss. I wish my sincerest condolences to Matt's family and his brave and amazing wife. Matt helped me through many hard times when I was at a very insecure and bad place. Matt was a friend. Matt was honorable. Matt touched my life. I am glad to know Matt found true love and a peaceful happy life in the prior years to his passing. I just wish Matt would have been able to experience it for a longer time. I do know that if Matt is anywhere, he is by God's side as one of his angels. Thank you Matt for the memories and GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL OF YOUR LOVED ONES! Ali Van Nest alijane808@hotmail.com
