From Pat Shoukry, New York, NY
Hey Matt, Hope you are doing well. Just want to say a big THANK YOU for your bravery and sacrifice in the service of our beloved country. I work just 6 miles from “Ground Zero” in NYC. Being on the “front lines” of the Homefront, we know all too well that freedom does not come free. Guess you could say we’ve “been through the fire” here, yet we carry on each day standin tall with heads high because of our awesome US Military; of which you are a part. May God bless you and all those you love, and return you to them safely and soon. You will remain in my prayers. With my very best wishes, Pat

From Stephanie Crellin, Cincinnati, OH
4-8-04: to the Serio Family Your son meant a lot to my brother, Cpl Chuck Crellin. They were roommates most recently in Japan, and more than that, good Friends. Chuck said Matt (called him "Serio") was his best friend in the Marines. Serio was a good guy - my favorite of all of the Marines I met through my brother. When I came out to LA for work, he would always help me - always up for the challenge. I have had many a steak dinner with him, and always enjoyed his company. He was one of the best young men I have ever met - more secure in himself and more mature than other men his age. I am hopeful you will find comfort in the future in the knowledge that he helped my brother through some rough times, and enjoyed some seriously good humor with the best of the best. Your family is in my thoughts constantly.

From Ricky Froncillo, Kaneohe Bay, Hi
To the Serio Family...I knew your son for a breif time, 1 month to be exact. I met him on recruiter assistance in Dec of 2002. I was put in charge of 25 Marines. When Matt showed up, he and I were the only grunts in the room. Once I learned he was a grunt, I instantaneously gravitated towards him. Oce I found out who this young Marine was, I found more things about him to be similiar to myself. I tried to teach him as much as I could being a seasoned Marine, after a deployment already to the combat area. He was always jovial and always was talking positive about his experinces so far in the Fleet Marine Force. We were easily able to become friends and we had a good time that month we were home. I never scene Matt after that month, and I always wondered how he was making out. As a Marine Infantryman, I can assure you Matt was a standout. I never trained with him, but when you are around people of Matt's quality, you learn real fast how valuable the Matts are in your life as a grunt. He is apart of the type of breed that do not come often. He was apart of a breed, that are easily made into leaders, someone you can rely on through thick and thin, and know no matter what kind of situation you may find yourself in, he would be there next to you ready to take your side, and have your back. The quality of the charactor of your son is incomparable and I am extremly devistated that Matt is no longer with us in body. His spirit will forever live on in my heart and mind. He is the epidemy of selfless service, and heroism. I know there is nothing for me to say to comfort your suffering. But I thought I would let you know that I am here for you, if you need anything for his funneral service, or anything else for that matter. My number is 808-783-5676. I will be home in Rhode Island on the 19th of April, and I intend to stop by and pay a visit. Respectfully, and devistated, Cpl Ricky Froncillo

Your life will never be the same without him but please know that there are people out there that will continue to hold him and you in their hearts. He will be missed by an extended large family as well in the young men and women who served with him. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
