BOSTON — Tony Allen’s 2008 season could be over.
While playing in a one-on-one tournament with Rajon Rondo, Glen Davis and Gabe Pruitt at practice yesterday, the Celtics defensive specialist injured his right ankle.
He did not dress for last night’s game, and Boston forward Brian Scalabrine took his place on the Celtics roster.
Allen said he hoped his ankle heals quickly.
“Hopefully it will be better by tomorrow,” Allen said. “If I can just get the pain out of it. I was in the motion of making a move and I tripped. I was actually playing good until that last play. I tripped over my own foot.”
Allen had played only six minutes in this series and he was averaging only 1.0 point, 0.1 assists, and 0.2 rebounds per game when he did get playing time in the postseason. Allen had played only 46 minutes in the playoffs for the Celtics — the least among all of the Boston players.
“I’m glad it wasn’t anything major,” Allen said. “Hopefully I can take some good out of this situation. It wasn’t nothing major, just a light sprain or whatever it is. [The doctors said] it is a strained Achilles.”
Allen said he’d be upset if he didn’t get to play again this season.
“I’m upset, but you can’t really put your feelings on something that’s not in your control, so you just have to roll with however it goes,” Allen said.
Allen said he’d rest his ankle, ice it, and massage it. Allen also said he could help the Celtics in future playoff games if he gets back to 100 percent.
“I feel like I’ve helped [out] for a while,” Allen said. “I can always help the Celtics, I feel, but right now, with this injury, it’s like a step back.”
Boston coach Doc Rivers didn’t find out about the injury until 90 minutes before last night’s game.
Allen’s 2007 season also ended in an injury.
On Jan. 10, 2007, in the final minutes of a Celtics’ loss to the Indiana Pacers, Allen suffered a debilitating knee injury as he landed awkwardly after an uncontested slam dunk after the whistle was blown. He tore both his anterior cruciate ligament and his medial collateral ligament. He underwent ACL reconstructive surgery Jan. 13 at New England Baptist Hospital.
