BOSTON — With one already highly coveted free agent gone with the departure of James Posey, who signed a four-year, $25-million deal with New Orleans last week, the Celtics still have several more free agents on their roster that they have shown interest in re-signing, including Eddie House, Sam Cassell, P.J. Brown, Tony Allen and Scot Pollard.
House, a fan favorite throughout the season as a 3-point specialist off the bench, said last week that he would like to re-sign with the Celtics, but the 30-year-old backup point guard, like everyone in the country no matter what their job is, is looking for a job with longevity and a more money.
“I think that’s something that I deserve after winning the Finals and I don’t think I played bad,” House said last week. “I think I played well given the circumstances of not playing and then coming back in and having to play. I think I held my own pretty well.
“A little bit of a raise and just some security,” is what House is looking for.
Not only does House want longevity and a raise, he also wants to be in the rotation and play a role in helping a team win games. That will also be on his mind when he decides which team he wants to sign with.
“You want to play,” House said. “You don’t want to go anywhere where you are sitting on the bench, especially after winning a championship, so that does come into play.”
House provided a spark off the bench for most of the season until the Celtics signed Sam Cassell on March 3. Cassell made his debut with the Celtics on March 10 and quickly began taking minutes away from House.
But House remained confident and he played well in spurts during the Celtics playoff championship run.
After averaging only 4.3 minutes in the first round, 8.8 minutes in the Eastern Conference semifinals, and 3.4 minutes in the Eastern Conference finals, House’s minutes skyrocketed to 18.5 minutes per game in the NBA Finals.
As a result, he went from averaging under two points per game in the playoffs to eight points per game in the Finals.
“My agent and [Celtics general manager and director of player personnel] Danny [Ainge] and they are trying to get something that everybody can feel good about and that’s what is going on right now. I’m not worried about that stuff. ”
When asked whether the Celtics were his first choice, House said, “of course.”
“I’m going to have a job and that’s one thing that I really don’t worry about too much,” House said. “During the free-agency time, I don’t get into the business part of it. I get mentally prepared to do my job and get ready to play basketball. I prepare myself for when it’s time for training camp I’ll be ready.”
If House isn’t willing to settle for a one-year deal which Boston reportedly wants to give him, the Celtics may try to sign Miami’s Jason Williams to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum contract.
They are all unrestricted free agents. The Celtics will have a tough time going after restricted free agents because they will have $60 million tied up between Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett next year, and a team can match whatever Boston offers to a restricted free agent if they want to keep that particular player.
But Boston does have a mid-level exception amount of $5.5 million it can offer a player for next season.
Ainge recently said that Cassell hadn’t decided whether he wanted to play one more season or go into coaching and that Brown is leaning towards retirement. He also recently said that just because the Celtics didn’t offer Allen, a defensive specialist, a qualifying offer to prevent him from becoming a restricted free agent, that didn’t mean that they were not interested in Allen.
Now that Posey is gone, the Celtics may look into signing unrestricted free agents Michael Finley, Devean George, Bonzi Wells, Matt Barnes, Bostjan Nachbar or Maurice Evans to replace Posey.
The Celtics signed free agent center Patrick O’Bryant (two years at the NBA minimum) last week.
With Boston’s starting five intact for next season — Pierce, Garnett, Allen, Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins — the Celtics will spend the rest of the summer trying to fill out its roster in an attempt to try to repeat as champions next year.
