THE ANSWERS
1-b — Frank Selvy had an eight-foot jump shot at the end of regulation in Game Seven of the ’62 Finals with the score tied. If he makes it, the Lakers win.
2-c — Although (b) is acceptable and (a) is understandable. Schaus coached West at West Virginia and then joined him as head coach in L.A. He despised Auerbach, maybe because he kept losing to him. And one of the notable characteristics was a propensity to stomp his foot when he got upset.
3-d — Nelson had the ball deflected to him at the foul line with 1:15 left and put up an ugly set shot that hit the back rim, bounced high and fell through the net for a 105-102 lead.
Van Breda Kolff, who had issues with Wilt Chamberlain all season, refused to put Wilt back in the game down the stretch — and if you watch the clip on YouTube, understudy Mel Counts got stuffed by Bill Russell on a base-line drive in the final 40 seconds with the Lakers trailing by three.
And Cooke, the owner, had the bright idea of putting balloons in the rafters of the Forum to be released when the Lakers won. Gee, you think the Celtics had a problem with that?
4-b — Klingons were a cunning warrior race in the Star Trek series, and Riley made the comparison in suggesting Boston didn’t always win with honor.
5-d — West, by then the Lakers’ general manager, couldn’t bear the idea that the guys in green might beat him again. So he stayed home as his team won Game Six — the only visiting team to win an NBA championship in Boston Garden.
6-a — It was 1959, Elgin Baylor was Rookie of the Year, and the Lakers were two seasons away from moving to L.A. This was an unexpected trip to the Finals, and it ended in a Celtics sweep.
7-b — The Celtics franchise has won 16 titles. The Lakers have won 14.
8-d — The head coach? Ex-Celtic Bill Sharman. His assistant? Ex-Celtic K.C. Jones.
If you got 70 percent or better? Congratulations. You’re old.
