Garnett is unchanging force for the Celtics
07:23 AM EDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008
BOSTON — The Celtics do not worry about Kevin Garnett. If he’s playing well, they leave their big man alone. If he has an off-game, they do the same.
Garnett was limited to a series-low 15 points in a Game Four loss in Cleveland. It’s not that the Celtics’ leading scorer played poorly; it’s just that his teammates forgot he was on the floor. With only two shot attempts in the fourth quarter, Garnett was not a factor as the Cavaliers outscored the Celtics, 20-12, in the fourth quarter to take a 88-77 win.
As the Celtics flew home from Cleveland and prepared for last night’s critical Game Five, no one worried about Garnett. He simply bounced back and came through with 26 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocks.
“You know he is going to bounce back,” said Paul Pierce.
“I just think Kevin is so hard on himself that he pushes himself to the limit to where he is going to bounce back, and that’s what he did tonight. He takes these losses just as hard or even harder than everybody in the locker room, and you can see it on his face and feel it when you are around him. You knew he was going to come out with that spirit from the jump.”
Garnett says that this playoff run has been draining. The Celtics haven’t won on the road, a fact that is clearly getting under the players’ skin.
They can end the 0-5 road skid tomorrow night and close out the Cavaliers in the process. If so, they’ll open the Eastern Conference final Sunday against Detroit in the Garden.
“This whole playoff run is full of emotion and you are pretty drained after the games,” Garnett said. “The significance of each game, knowing you could go home. We enjoy the win tonight, but we know it’s a biggest task at hand trying to play better to close this thing out.”
Davis comes up big
The Celtics received a big — and unexpected — boost off the bench in the second half from Glen “Big Baby” Davis. He came through with six points on 3-for-4 shooting in a busy second-half stretch. Davis played in place of Leon Powe, who saw only four minutes off the bench.
“I’m just waiting,” he said. “That is my role and everybody has a role on this team. I have to be ready and bring energy.”
