Staples Center won't show final games in Boston
07:27 AM EDT on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Staples Center won’t host an NBA Finals viewing party for Game 6 (or Game 7 if necessary) of the Lakers and Celtics playoff series.
The Lakers say the decision not to show the games on big screen televisions at their home court was made after a meeting with law enforcement and city representatives.
The Lakers hung on Sunday night to beat the Celtics 103-98 to send the NBA Finals back to Boston. Game 6 is Tuesday night, with the Celtics leading the best-of-seven series 3-2.
The Lakers organization says in a statement that the decision was made after weighing “concerns for resources needed to ensure the safety of fans” as well as “potential financial burdens on various city departments.”
Thousands of fans watched the first two games of the series at the Staples Center.
