Lakers 103, Celtics 98 -- Bryant's steal was the defensive play of the game
09:57 AM EDT on Monday, June 16, 2008
LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant made the key defensive play in the game, poking the ball away from Paul Pierce with just 40 seconds left in a 97-95 game. Lamar Odom scooped up the loose ball and fed a breaking Bryant for an easy layup and a four-point lead.
Bryant was one of several Lakers who tried to keep Pierce in check but struggled. Pierce continually drove though L.A. double teams and made strong, acrobatic finishes at the rim.
"We needed that because we needed an easy hoop," Bryant of his steal. "Their defense was tightening on us. Paul has such a big body and he protects the ball extremely well. As soon as I noticed that the ball was exposed just a little bit, it was important for me to go after it."
Pierce commended Bryant after the game. While a replay showed that Bryant may have brushed Pierce’s elbow on the reach, Pierce said he was glad that the officials let the players decide the game in the closing minute.
Bryant returned the favor with kind words about Pierce. After struggling in Game Three in L.A., Pierce bounced back with a strong Game Four (20 points) and a monster, 38-point effort in his hometown last night.
"Paul’s one of my favorite players in the league. He’s tough," said Bryant. "He has the whole package. I enjoy watching him play, I enjoy playing against him. As far as tonight, he does what a great player does. He attacked and saw opportunities to keep his team in the game."
