Don't expect Cassell back in Celtics lineup soon
08:39 AM EST on Tuesday, January 13, 2009
BOSTON -- With all of the Celtics' injuries, one would think that it might be time to call on veteran backup point guard Sam Cassell. But doc Rivers isn’t ready to call his number just yet.
“Not right now,” Rivers said. “I may [play him], but I really don’t want to right now. I held off the temptation and there were a couple of games where I actually thought about putting him in. But I just don’t really want to play him right now. I like him where he’s at, but he may have his time.”
Cassell has not played in a game this season. He averaged 7.6 points per game last year for the Celtics.
“We might just save him [until the playoffs],” Rivers said. “I just don’t want to take the chance. He’s at an age where he’s got an expiration date and I don’t want to use him.”
