•Thu. Marion Eppley Wildlife Sanctuary, West Kingston. Rare opportunity to explore this refuge, which is closed to the public except for guided, educational programs. 7:30 am.
•Fri. Fisherville Brook Refuge, Exeter. Explore the refuge in search of neo-tropical migrants. Observe birds including northern waterthrush, prairie warblers, bluebirds, scarlet tanagers and others. Bring binoculars. 8 am.

Audubon Society of Rhode Island Program: Leaf Print Tote Bag Workshop, Powder Mill Ledges Refuge, 12 Sanderson Rd., Smithfield. 949-5454, ext. 3041; www.asri.org. Learn to identify some local plants and trees as you create a large-size leaf-printed tote bag. Program includes a short, easy walk on the refuge to identify the perfect leaves and then return to the nature center to press print bags. Each participant will complete one bag. Sat 10 am-noon. $18, children $15; members $15, $12. All materials included. Advance registration. Ages 8-adult.
Family Bay Day with Save the Bay. Explore the bay on boat; collect critters. Bay Center, Providence. Sat 10 am-1 pm. $20, children 3-12 $10, children 2 and younger free. Reservations recommended.
Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom, Roger Williams Park Zoo, 1000 Elmwood Ave., Providence. 785-3510; www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org. New walk-through exhibit is set inside a 2,100 greenhouse landscaped with butterfly-friendly flowers and nectar plants and features about 500 butterflies (North American species), offering visitors a closes encounter. Opening weekend, Sat-Sun, features a variety of butterfly-themed activities and demonstrations. Daily 9:30 am-4:30 pm. $3, children 3-12 in $2 in addition to zoo admission ($12, seniors $8, children 3-12 $6).
Nature Conservancy Program: Lady’s-Slipper Walk, Carter Preserve, Route 112, Charlestown. 529-1072 or e-mail tmooney@tnc.org. Two-mile walk featuring pink lady’s-slipper orchids, starflowers and Canada mayflowers. Meet in parking lot on Old Mill Road. Sat 9 am. Free. Call to register.
New Dawn Earth Center Program: Introduction to Birding, 75 Wrentham Rd., Cumberland. 333-1341; newdawnearthcenter.org. Learn the basics of birding while you walk around various habitats including a pond, fields and wooded areas. Bring binoculars if you have them. Sat 7-9 am. Rhode Island Wild Plant Society Program and Walk: An Introduction to Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide. www.riwps.org. or e-mail office@riwps.org. Two sessions. First (May 24) is a workshop followed by a field work/walk and a second (June 8) is a field trip to another site to help participants get started. 9 am-noon. With leader Kathy Barton.
