Chamber of Commerce recognizes companies

The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce recognized at its annual dinner Monday night the companies, institutions and organizations that contribute to the state’s knowledge economy.

Davol Inc., one of six divisions of C.R. Bard, Inc., was singled out for its investment of about $30 million annually in research and development of medical devices. Davol, based in Warwick, employs about 200 workers.

The Chamber also recognized 24 representatives from institutions that have committed $376 million to capital investments, invested $479 million in research and attracted $171 million in federal research funds to Rhode Island.

Blackstone Valley

Small-business merchants organization forms

A new organization, the Blackstone Valley Merchant Network, has been formed to promote small businesses through technical assistance, business advocacy and education.

Many businesses in the group are based in Pawtucket, Central Falls and Cumberland. Also, many entrepreneurs and small businesses in the area are minority owned and located in a socially, culturally diverse and economically challenged densely urbanized areas.

The collaboration is being lead by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, Spanish American Merchants Association and the tri-community coalition of Pawtucket, Central Falls and Cumberland.

Dollar: In trading against major currencies yesterday in New York, the dollar ended at 89.02 Japanese yen, up from Friday’s close of 88.96 yen. The euro closed at 3:30 p.m. at $1.4973, up from $1.4857.

Metals: Gold for current delivery closed at $1,164.30 a troy ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange, from Friday’s close of $1,146.40. Silver closed at $18.603 an ounce, up from $18.433.
