The American Petroleum Institute set up a one-day interactive technology exhibit and presentation at the Rhode Island State House yesterday to give the oil and gas industry perspective on energy issues.

The API Technology Tour is a traveling exhibit that highlights the technology the industry uses to find and harvest gas and oil in hard-to-reach places. It includes 3-D computer visualizations based on earthquake-measuring technology. Seismic imaging has increased exploration success rates by 50 percent, according to the API.

Deep-water drill ships can now access reserves in 10,000 feet of water — almost 2 miles deep — three times the distance that could be reached 10 years ago.

The purpose of the exhibit, API said, was to “educate state legislators and the community on API’s efforts to deliver responsible energy security for future generations.”

The exhibit included four informational panels and four interactive kiosks.

The API is a national trade association that represents the interests of oil and natural gas companies in the United States. Its 400 corporate members include the largest oil companies to the small, independents dealers.
