EDC, R.I. Sports Council to move

01:00 AM EST on Saturday, January 13, 2007

Journal staff and wire reports

Two agencies — the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and the Rhode Island Sports Council — are starting the new year by moving their offices.

The EDC will relocate its offices Tuesday from the Westin Providence hotel to the American Locomotive Works development site, on Valley Street, in Providence.

“The RIEDC board of directors, which I chair, set the goal to relocate the RIEDC offices in a community where our presence could make an immediate and long-term impact,” Governor Carcieri said in a statement.

“By bringing the RIEDC to the ALCO site, we’ve realized this goal and we are setting the foundation for the revitalization of this area of Providence.”

The EDC’s new address is 315 Iron Horse Way, Suite 101, Providence.

Struever Bros., Eccles and Rouse is developing the 25-acre American Locomotive Works site by rehabilitating mill buildings and constructing 2 million square feet of mixed-used space.

The EDC issued a request for proposals, and its directors reviewed eight possible sites managed by five developers. The EDC’s managers concluded that the American Locomotive redevelopment site met the requirements to relocate to an area where the agency’s presence would have a positive community impact.

The Rhode Island Sports Council is moving from the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce building to the building at 10 Dorrance St. in Providence. The council was established in 1993 to draw major amateur and professional sporting events to the state as a tourism and economic generator.

“We’re aiming to maximize the potential of Rhode Island’s ability to attract high-profile action sporting events,” said John Mousseau, executive director of the council

“The tremendous bench strength of our new board of directors/executive committee in terms of talent, expertise and business savvy, will certainly help in the execution of this goal, as will our new location, which gives us much greater space, amenities and opportunities.”

The Rhode Island Sports Council is a nonprofit organization supported by an annual state grant and by an annual fundraiser held in August.

The council’s new board includes:

Michael Clarkin, of Barrington, senior vice president/corporate banking group, Citizens Bank; Herbert Cummings, of Bristol, past vice chairman, Citizens Financial Group; David Darlington, of North Kingstown, chairman, Rhode Island Turnpike & Bridge Authority; Matthew Gill, of Narragansett, chairman, The Hudson Companies; Joseph Hassett, of East Greenwich, vice president, Bank of America; Karen Jedson, of South Kingstown, director, Department of Tourism, Culture and Development, City of Warwick; Gerard Martineau, of Narragansett, president, The Upland Group and former majority leader, Rhode Island House of Representatives; John Mousseau, of North Smithfield, executive director, R.I. Sports Council; Thomas Odjakjian, of Barrington, associate commissioner/TV & men’s basketball scheduling, The Big East Conference; Bill Parsons, of North Providence, deputy director, Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation; and Donald Tencher, of South Kingstown, director of athletics, Rhode Island College.
