CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Freshman Jeff Buvinow scored a power-play goal with just over five minutes left in regulation and junior goaltender Dan Rosen made a career-high 50 saves to help lead the Brown men’s hockey team to a 1-1 tie with Harvard last night at the Bright Hockey Center.

After a scoreless and fairly even first period, which saw each team take 10 shots during even-strength play, Harvard grabbed a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the second period. Steve Rolecek collected the puck after faceoff win by Doug Rogers and slipped it past Rosen for the 1-0 lead.

The Crimson continued to dominate the Bears for the rest of the period, building a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal to limit Brown’s chances.

However, the Bears nearly tied the game with just under 10 minutes left in the second period when junior Aaron Volpatti had Crimson goalie Matt Holye beat, but his shot glanced off the left post to hold the score at 1-0, Harvard. Twice Rosen countered with game-saving stops, including one with his entire body in the net and the heel of his stick batting the puck over the crossbar.

As they have all season long, the Bears came out with renewed energy in the third period, outshooting the Crimson during the early going and winning most of the faceoffs. Finally, in the 15th minute of the third period, the Bears broke through for the tying goal, scoring their 18th power-play goal of the season.

After collecting the puck from senior leading scorer Matt Vokes, Buvinow fired a slap shot from the left point that eluded Holye to force overtime. Freshman Jarred Smith, who was on the top power-play unit in place of injured captain Devin Timberlake, earned his first career power-play point with an assist on the goal as well.

Brown went on the power play 1:24 into overtime, but could not find the net, and then the Crimson gained the man-advantage just 18 seconds after the Bears’ opportunity expired. With under 30 seconds remaining, sophomore Harry Zolnierczyk broke in for a short-handed bid but was whistled for charging the goalie, giving Harvard a two-man advantage for the final 22 seconds of the game. The Crimson took three shots during this time, but Rosen saved two of them and the third was blocked. After the second save by Rosen, junior Jordan Pietrus won a critical defensive zone faceoff to help clinch the tie for the Bears.
