PROVIDENCE — The Brown men’s ice hockey team (0-2-0) spotted Yale (1-0-0) a 2-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes of play and couldn’t recover, as the Bulldogs went on to earn a 6-3 victory over the Bears last night in nonleague action in the final day of competition at the Showcase at Meehan.

Senior Matt Vokes led the Bears with a pair of assists, his second and third of the season, while freshman Bobby Farnham scored his first career goal.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring 3:42 into the game when Nick Jackowiak beat junior goaltender Dan Rosen with a power-play goal from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.

Yale increased its lead to 2-0 at 11:09 when Sean Backman fired the puck past Rosen from the top of the left faceoff circle. Rosen initially made a stick-save on the shot, but the puck bounced up and over Rosen, before trickling across the goal line.

The Bears got one back with just 17 seconds remaining in the period when Farnham beat Alec Richards over his left shoulder from right in front of the net for his first career goal. Senior Mike Stuart dumped the puck into the zone. It bounced off the end boards and went to Farnham in the slot. Farnham fired a quick shot to bring the Bears to within one heading into the first intermission.

The Bulldogs scored twice in a span of 1:43 early in the second period for a 4-1 advantage at the 7:23 mark. Backman tallied his second of the night at 5:40 from the center of the right faceoff circle, and Kevin Limbert increased the Yale lead to 4-1 at 7:23.

Sophomore Jeremy Russell brought Brown to within 4-2 with his first of the season at 16:01, scoring with just one second left on a Bears’ power-play. Freshman Jeff Buvinow got the puck to senior Matt Vokes above the left faceoff circle. Vokes pushed it over to Russell in the high slot and he beat Richards with a low shot to the right post.

Just 2:57 later, however, Yale regained the three-goal cushion, as Chris Cahill’s shot deflected off the leg of a Brown defender and past Rosen. The Bears trailed, 5-2 heading into the final 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs took their biggest lead of the night, 6-2, at 7:08 of the third period, when Mark Arcobello had three shots from the top of the crease. Rosen saved the first two, but could not get to the third.

The Bears fought to stay in the game, as junior Jordan Pietrus converted a two-on-one rush with senior Ryan Garbutt 18 seconds into a Brown power-play. Vokes also assisted, earning his second assist of the night. Dating back to last season, Garbutt has now tallied at least one point in each of the last eight games.

For the game, Rosen finished with 35 saves, while Richards made 25 for the Bulldogs.

Brown continues action next weekend when it travels to Clarkson and St. Lawrence in a pair of ECAC games. College Hockey
