Brown 35, Yale 21: 2 TD tosses for Newhall-Caballero

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Kyle Newhall-Caballero threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third, and Brown steamrolled one of the nation’s best defenses for nearly 500 yards Saturday in a 35-21 win over Yale.
Newhall-Caballero went 23-for-30 for 269 yards.
“Last year, we scored three points against the same defense,” Brown coach Phil Estes said. “Things just happened. I can’t tell you why last week we can’t score an offensive touchdown (against Penn). This offense goes.”
Following a scoreless first quarter, Brown (5-3 overall, 3-2 Ivy League) got on the board first after Russell Leedy ended a Yale drive with an interception at the Bears’ 29. Brown needed 11 plays to drive 71 yards, scoring on Kyle Newhall-Caballero’s 10-yard pass to Buddy Farnham for a 7-0 lead.
“I guess it’s just the number of components,” Estes said. “If one is out of synch, sometimes it throws the whole offense out of synch. We were out of synch a lot last week. This week, were much more in synch. Kyle ran so well and threw some beautiful balls. He made plays out there.”
Yale (4-4, 2-3) answered quickly, needing just four plays to drive 64 yards on Mordecai Cargill’s 41-yard touchdown reception from Patrick Witt to cut the lead to 7-6. Witt was 28-for-41 for 285 yards and two touchdowns.
Adam Money’s 77-yard interception return for a touchdown — the fourth-longest interception return in Yale history — put the Bulldogs in front, 12-7, with 2:35 to play in the half.
Farnham’s kickoff return and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Yale put Brown near midfield. Newhall-Caballero scored on a 5-yard run for a 14-12 halftime lead.
Brown increased its lead to 21-12 on its first possession of the third quarter, scoring on Newhall-Caballero’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Farnham. The Bears continued to move the ball easily on their next possession, driving 76 yards for the score on Spiro Theodhosi’s 16-yard run. Theodosi finished with 167 yards rushing.
“When you don’t you play well enough to win, you don’t,” Yale coach Tom Williams said. “Clearly today, we didn’t play well enough. We had our opportunities, and we didn’t quite take advantage of them.
“Brown made the necessary plays. There were able to come out and run the football and stay on the field with some big third downs.”
Alex Barnes 35-yard field goal on Yale’s last possession of the third quarter cut the Brown lead to 28-15. Brown answered quickly again, capitalizing on Blaine Grinna’s interception and Bobby Sewall’s 3-yard touchdown run to take a 35-15 lead early in the fourth quarter.
