WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senior guard Garrison Carr scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to help American University (7-6) defeat the Brown basketball team last night, 68-53.
The Bears, now 5-7 overall, were led by junior Matt Mullery, who tossed in 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half.
Carr, a 1,000-point scorer for the Eagles, connected on 8 of 12 field-goal attempts, including 5 of 7 from behind the 3-point arc. American converted 9 of 18 treys for the game and shot 54 percent from the field (25 of 46).
Brown struggled from the field, and especially from behind the 3-point arc, where the Bears shot just 30 percent, connecting on 6 of 20 attempts. Just a few days ago, Brown shot 83 percent from behind the arc in a win over Quinnipiac.
Leading by 20-19 with 3:42 left in the first half, American broke open a close game with an 8-0 run over the next 1:37 to pull ahead by a 28-19 margin with 2:05 remaining. Eagles freshman Stephen Lumpkins netted four of his six first-half points in the spurt as American took a 33-24 halftime lead.
Sophomore Adrian Williams kept the Bears in contention with eight first-half points, and finished the game with 13, on 4-for-8 shooting from the free-throw line and going 3-for-6 from 3-point range.
