COLLEGE NOTES -- How the locals fared at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships

Providence College junior Danette Doetzel finished second in the 10,000 at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and earned All-America recognition. She finished in 33:44.23. Lisa Koll of Iowa State won the race in 32:44.95. Doetzel was the Northeast Region female athlete of the year.
Ahmed Haji (14:41.28) and Katie DiCamillo (17:54), each running the 5,000, did not qualify for the finals.
Brown freshman Brynn Smith (47-08.5) finished 26th in the shot put preliminaries.
URI throwers Jasmine Jennings (Warwick/Veterans) and Sarah Thornton had a tough time in the hammer throw. Jennings, the East Regional champion, fouled twice before throwing 182-05. She finished 26th. Thornton fouled on each attempt.
Matt Maloney (Barrington/La Salle), a junior at Tennessee, qualified for the championships in the javelin with a toss of 228-2, 13th in the nation, but managed only 194-4 at Drake and did not advance to the final. He had finished second in the SEC outdoor championships.
