Times' Rhoden to discuss race and sports at Brown

Race and sport in America will be the subject of a panel discussion Monday night at Brown. William C. Rhoden, sports columnist for the New York Times and an author, is the star of the panel. Nicole Burns, a junior and All-Ivy sprinter on the Brown track team, is also on the panel. Basketball coach Craig Robinson is scheduled to join them, but that was before he headed from the Final Four in San Antonio to Corvallis to look at the Oregon State job. Jim Campbell, professor of Africana Studies and American Studies, will moderate.
The panelists will discuss the role that race plays in professional and amateur sports.
Rhoden's books include Forty Million Dollar Slaves about black athletes acquiring wealth without making progress and Third and a Mile: From Fritz Pollard to Michael Vick, a history of the black quarterback.
The discussion will start at 7 p.m. in Andrews Dining Hall on the Brown campus. The Department of Athletics and the Third World Center are sponsoring the event.
