CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia's strong inside game and intense pressure defense proved too much for the Brown basketball team as the Cavaliers posted a 74-50 victory at the John Paul Jones Arena last night.

Mike Scott scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers (7-5), while Brown sophomore Peter Sullivan scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the second half to lead the Bears (5-8).

Brown and Virginia last met in the first round of the 2003 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Brown has not played an Atlantic Coast Conference team since that meeting.

"We had to play tough and hard tonight and I thought we really competed throughout the game," said Brown head coach Jesse Agel. "We played hard for the entire 40 minutes and that can only help us down the road."

Virginia built a 39-29 halftime lead behind strong full-court pressure that forced nine Brown turnovers, scoring 15 points from the forced turnovers.

The Bears stayed in the game by shooting 52 percent in the first half, with junior Matt Mullery connecting on 4 of 5 field goals in scoring eight points, and sophomore Adrian Williams shooting 2 of 3 from the field to register eight first-half points. Scott tossed in 13 first-half points for Virginia.

In the second half, the Cavaliers made a concerted effort to penetrate and score inside with 22 of their 35 second-half points coming in the paint. Brown also cooled off in the second half, connecting on just 7 of 30 (23 percent) field-goal attempts.

Virginia had the better of play on the backboards, out-rebounding the Bears by a 41-29 margin.

Sullivan added six rebounds to go with his team-high 14 points, while Williams came up with 13 points. Mullery finished the game with eight points and three blocked shots, picking up four fouls in the second half before fouling out with 7:58 left to play. Junior Steve Gruber made a Sportscenter shot for Brown in the second half, connecting on a turnaround jump shot from the backcourt as the shot clock expired.

The Bears return home to Providence for their final non-league game of the season on Saturday against Bryant. Game time is 4 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
