Line of Scrimmage (paperback, Sourcebooks Casablanca, 386 pages, $6.99), the debut romance novel by Marie Force of Portsmouth, centers on an NFL superstar who mounts the “Hail Mary” play of a lifetime in an attempt to win back his wife.
Snug Harbor Press has published The Haunting on Devil’s Den Road, the first in the new “Ghost Girls” series of young adult novels by Karen Chilton of South Kingstown and illustrated by Gary McCluskey of Providence (paperback, 228 pages, $10.99). The series follows 13-year-old Paige Parker as she investigates the identity of a ghost haunting her house in rural Rhode Island.
James W. Skehan, a professor emeritus in the department of Ggeology and geophysics at Boston College, has written Roadside Geology of Connecticut and Rhode Island (Mountain Press Publishing Co., 304 pages, $26). With 20 road guides, complete with maps, diagrams and more than 100 color photographs, the paperback locates and explains the rocks and landforms visible from the states’ highways and at nearby parks and historic sites. Readers will discover “stretched” pebbles at Purgatory Chasm, dinosaur footprints at Dinosaur State Park and glacial moraines protruding from the waters of Block Island and Long Island Sounds.
Red Sox blogger Jere Smith of Providence and his mother, Mary-Ann Tirone Smith, have written Dirty Water: A Red Sox Mystery (Hall of Fame Press, 245 pages, $22.95). The mystery, which opens with the discovery of an abandoned baby in the Fenway Park clubhouse, features the 2007 World Champion ballplayers and a Boston homicide detective who played a key role in Tirone Smith’s previous novel, She Smiled Sweetly.
Author and photographer Traer Scott of Providence, the author of Shelter Dogs and Street Dogs, has written Wild Horses –– Endangered Beauty (Merrell Publishers, 144 pages, $27.95). The books calls attention to the plight of wild horses in the United States and Puerto Rico and the efforts of the individuals and groups trying to protect them.
Jeung Hwa Park of Providence is one of the “art knitters” profiled in Knitting Art: Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary Artists (Voyageur Press, 160 pages, $34.95) by Karen Searle, a fiber artist who specializes in knit and crochet sculptural works. The book contains 171 color photos.
