Early in this idiosyncratic account of Elizabeth II's reign, A.N. Wilson notes that in 1952, "a quarter of British homes had inadequate sanitary arrangements, outdoor lavatories, and bathrooms shared with neighbors." And more than half the population over 30 had no teeth. Wilson admits "it would be perverse not to rejoice" in the living standards and prosperity that has taken place in the last half of the 20th century.
