Art: What the critics are saying

"Car Culture" -- a clever, if uneven, juried exhibit at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield through Saturday -- manages to fit a wide variety of styles, attitudes and viewpoints under its sleekly contoured hood. Indeed, everyone from Prius owners to NASCAR dads will find something to like about this show.

Unfortunately, while "Car Culture" has plenty of variety, it lacks the quality and consistency that might have earned it a place in the winner's circle. In fact, only a handful of pieces really stand out.

But unlike most juried shows, this one comes with a statement by juror Bart Parker that's at once engaging, intelligent and impassioned. "Car Culture" may not be the hottest thing on the road, but thanks to Parker's statement it's worth a visit.
