Turn holiday shopping into an art form

Does holiday shopping often leave you feeling more like a grumpy Grinch than a jolly Santa? If so, here’s a tip that may save you time and money: try stopping by one or more of the area’s growing number of holiday-season art sales.

Not only are events such as the annual Foundry Artists Show in Pawtucket and the RISD Alumni Holiday Art Sale in Providence more fun than a trip to the mall, but the range of gift selections — everything from inexpensive stocking stuffers to handmade glass, jewelry and housewares — can’t be beat.

And just to give you an idea of what’s available, we’ve rounded up some of the best of the best from this year’s sales. On this page you’ll find the work of Heather Wells, a young North Attleboro designer who fashions colorful lamps and umbrellas from cocktail umbrellas; Yuh Okano, a RISD-trained textile artist whose luscious tie-dyed scarves are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art; and Jonathan Glatt, a Warren jewelry-maker whose playful and affordable bracelets are made from nylon zip-ties.

See below for times, dates and other information on the various sales. In the meantime, happy shopping!
