Frequently Asked Questions
Updated 5/10/01
Important: Do not upload the .PSD files Photoshop makes. Only the background layer, which is usually white, comes across. Flatten these images and Save as... jpg, .gif or .tiff.

What is this about?
We're inviting you to help us assemble The Rhode Island Collection on the web -- digital images of representative work by as many Rhode Island artists as possible. Each artist will have a personal page on which to display up to 8 images and answers to biographical and craft-interview questions.

Why would I do this?
This virtual show is an easy way to get your name and your work out there -- it takes far less time and work than mounting a gallery show -- and gives you a stable web address when friends and fans ask to see your work.

I don't live in Rhode Island. Can I put my work on this site?
If you live just over the state line in Seekonk or Attleboro, Mass., we'll stretch for you, but this is not a national project. Projo.com/art is intended to showcase the work of artists who hail from the greater Rhode Island area. But if you've made the bigtime, moved to NYC after scraping many years here... you're still a Rhode Islander.

What materials do I need?
An e-mail address, up to 8 digital image files of your work and caption information for each image (title, dimensions and medium).

What size and format should the images be?
Do not upload the .PSD files Photoshop makes. Only the background layer, which is usually white, comes across. Flatten these images and Save as... jpg, .gif or .tiff. JPEG (.jpg) will give the best results. We'll use the images at 72 dpi (dots per inch), and no wider than 400 pixels, so there's no need to upload huge files.

Won't people rip off my work?
The photos of your work will be so low-resolution and small, there's nothing anybody could do but look at them.

How will you display my work?
Each artist will have an individual web page displaying uploaded images and his or her answers to the biographical and craft-interview questions. See a sample page here.

Will my work appear on the Projo.com/art site immediately after I upload my images?
No, we preview each upload before it appears on the Projo.com/art site. This prevents tricksters from abusing the site, and gives us a chance to contact you if there's a technical problem.Your work should appear on the site within one business day.

What questions will you ask me?
The required questions are very basic: Your name, hometown, e-mail address, whether you're a professional, hobbyist or student. If you're a professional, we'll ask where you've shown your work. (If there are many, just mention a couple; this isn't the place for a resume) If you're a student, we'll ask what school you attend. (You must be 13 or older.)

What are these "Who are you?" and Craft Interview questions?
Although these questions are optional, the responses of many artists to the same questions will be interesting to readers. We hope you'll participate. Your responses will display on your personal page, and you're welcome to return at any time to http://www.projo.com/art/artists to change your answers.

We recommend that you print the questions or copy them to a textfile. Write your answers, edit and tweak till you're happy with them, then come back and paste them into the appropriate spaces. (If you try to answer them all thoughtfully online, the server may log you off for "inactivity": If you haven't clicked a link or proceeded to another page after 30 minutes, the system will disconnect you. Typing doesn't count.)

My child does great artwork. Can I upload some of it?
This format displays too much information to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Later we'll offer a compliant children's art display on projo/kids

Why do you send my password to my e-mail address?
To be sure we can contact you in case you forget your password, there's a problem with your image or, if you've chosen not to make your email address public, someone should want to contact you about your work. We will not use your e-mail address for any purpose except to contact you about your work. Read the Projo.com privacy policy

Will you sell my work for me?
No. We're a news organization on the web. We have no financial stake in any artist. If you find your work highlighted on the site, it's because you're having a show, there's a buzz about you, or your ship just came in.

I run a gallery. Can I upload my artists' work?
You're welcome to assist artists in putting their work online. Please make sure you have each artist's accurate e-mail address before you register them. Because each artist has an individual page, you must create a separate login for each artist.

May I upload other artists' work?
Please do not upload the work of other artists here unless you are formally representing them. If you own artwork you want to include in the Rhode Island Collection, upload photographs to the On Rhode Island Walls slideshow.

May I put prices on my work?
Not here.

May I let readers know how to find me?
You may choose to include your e-mail address with your work.

You offer to let me hide my e-mail address from the public. Why would I want to?
We'd prefer to give our visitors the opportunity to contact you directly about your work so, by default, your name will appear on Projo.com/art as a hyperlink to your e-mail address. If you'd rather be left alone in your studio and won't answer e-mail anyway, don't make it public. To hide your e-mail address, click on the box on the sign-up page that contains the check, next to "I would like to display my e-mail address to the public." If there's no check in the box, your e-mail address won't display.

I don't have digital images of my artwork, just prints or slides. What should i do?
Have the prints or slides scanned as .jpg files at a good copy shop. When you photograph new work, have the film processed as digital images and "printed" to a CD.

I have other questions.
If you don't see the answers here, ask them via . We'll try to answer them and, if they're of general interest, we'll add them to this page.
