Black on Benefit Street
A walk through a lesser-known side of Providence's Mile of History
Providence's Benefit Street is often called the "Mile of History," and it has been the focus of countless historical tours ever since the Providence Preservation Society saved many of the street's lovely old houses from planned "urban renewal" efforts some 40 years ago. Back then, in the 1950s and '60s, many of the people who lived on Benefit were black, as it had been primarily a black neighborhood of the city for many decades.

PROVIDENCE

Whatever sails your boat
across the Ocean State, there is perhaps one sine qua non for a career
politician: Benefit Street.

The

evolve. But there could be no stronger confirmation of the city's rebirth than
the arrival, in numbers that increase with each summer, of the camera-toting,
shorts-wearing, wallets-bulging creatures known as tourists.

Musicians
with pluck: Mandolinists
tune in to city
PROVIDENCE
— It's tuned like a violin,
but plucked like a guitar. Its sound conjures images of medieval minstrels strumming
tunes in the ancient piazzas of Rome, or the winding streets of Madrid. Or along
the river walks and in the music halls of Rhode Island's renaissance city.
Providence has become something of a mecca for mandolin players, and this weekend
the city is hosting the Providence International Mandolin Festival, the first
of its kind in the United States.
