PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Sales of foreclosed property have increased to almost 20 percent of Rhode Island home sales this year, much more than other New England states.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After a four-week course of addiction treatment, Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy returned to Congress Wednesday with what he called "excellent" prospects for long-term sobriety.

PROVIDENCE -- There are 34 tents in the squatter community off Wickenden Street, underneath now-closed stretches of Route 195 where the thoroughfare becomes Point Street and passes over the Providence River. The police say there are close to 60 people living there on a given night.

PROVIDENCE -- The Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union has asked a federal court to declare unconstitutional Narragansett's controversial "orange-sticker" policy, intended to clamp down on college students partying in rental houses in the seaside community.

New Medicaid rules aim to reduce nursing home admissions
Dozens of nursing home residents plan to leave costly medical institutions voluntarily in the coming months.

PROVIDENCE -- Rose Belanger, 79, a resident of Elmhurst Extended Care, will leave the nursing home as a result of new Medicaid rules. Backed by Governor Carcieri administration's push to rebalance Rhode Island's long-term care system, Belanger -- and dozens more nursing home residents -- plan to leave costly medical institutions voluntarily in the coming months.


Team of humanitarians goes to bat for Cuban people

The old school bus sat outside a Providence restaurant. It was covered in messages of peace, love and politics -- much like a '60s hippie bus. But this bus is bound for Cuba, part of a "peace caravan" delivering building, medical and educational supplies to the island nation.

JAMESTOWN -- The state Turnpike and Bridge Authority voted 3 to 1 yesterday to move toward increasing the tolls on the Pell Bridge for the first time in its 40-year history and possibly reinstituting tolls on the Mount Hope Bridge.
